By participating in the SMART vhb program and sharing his materials with fellow professors in the region, Professor Dr. Koenig is hoping to get one step closer to a dream of his – to bring the level of engineering classes up to par by sharing material, receiving feedback, recognizing what works and ultimately increasing continuity and quality.
Motivation to break new ground in teaching
Prof. Eric Koenig left his former employer as electrical engineer to join the world of academia in 2012. After his career change, Prof. Koenig began teaching Technical and Business English at TH Nürnberg in 2014. Fast forward to 2019, and Prof. Koenig is also the Academic Head of the Language Center. Over the course of 17 semesters here at TH Nürnberg, Prof. Koenig has developed numerous digitally supported as well as blended language courses.
In 2018/19 Prof. Koenig participated in the first round of the new SMART vhb program. Listen to his motivation in his own words:
Naturally, there were lessons learned while creating content for SMART vhb. Prof. Koenig acknowledges that a good plan is essential for success and to keep within the 12-month deadline. It is vital to keep in mind that the approach is not the same when you are preparing material for one’s own course. Therefore, in Prof. Koenig’s experience it is important to empathize with the others who will be using the material, keep their perspective in mind and create content that can be taken offline and implemented effectively.
In order to create interesting content which motivates and maintains the students’ attention, Prof. Koenig chose to work with an online animation platform called Vyond (previously called Go Animate). Prof. Koenig was familiar with the easy-to-use software and noticed that his students enjoy watching cartoons. Therefore, he used the opportunity to create a series of short Technical English cartoons between three and five minutes long for the SMART vhb Repository.
The advantages of sharing
Besides being one step closer to achieving his dream, there were a few benefits Prof. Koenig recognized by participating in the SMART vhb program. First of all, it provided the opportunity to evaluate each lesson more clearly, to define the learning objectives and think about how it is possible for the participants to reach the objectives. Secondly, it provided the opportunity to use this experience as a test to see what kind of feedback he receives from students and colleagues at TH Nürnberg and beyond.
